These are the faces of Valencia’s athletic elite. José Antonio Redolat and Marta Fernández de Castro took Valencian athletics to new heights. Now Marta Esteban is making history, beating her own records in every running event she competes in.
The three athletes are celebrating the arrival of a great international event — which is none other than the IAFF/Trinidad Alfonso World Half Marathon Championships Valencia 2018. The venue is Valencia, the City of Running and the date the 24th of March 2018.
José Antonio Redolat, European 1,500-metre champion, won a Gold Medal on the track and now wears the yellow shirt in the Redolat Team, which takes part in every one of the trials.
“A World Championships is the greatest thing you can take part in after The Olympic Games. All of us are proud that Valencia is the venue for the event. The start and finishing point is in Valencia’s ‘City of Arts and Sciences’ — one of the most beautiful places in the world to begin and end the trials, and with a circuit in a city where we have already lived a world record for the Half Marathon”, he said.
The former athlete and Valencian trainer is sure that the 2018 championship will be a great success: “It will be lots of fun for everyone and thousands of runners will take part — many of them from Valencian clubs. The city’s residents are going to line the streets to watch the world’s best runners go through their paces. Many members of the public will also run in the Half-Marathon”.
Marta Fernández de Castro competed at the highest levels in both road-running and cross-country events and she continues to seek new challenges. She will be accompanied by her fellow runners from Team 3FdC.
“Valencia has already held an Athletics World Championship on an indoor track but now we will enjoy an open-air World Championship through the city. The event is one that will bring together both top athletes and amateur runners, turning the city into a giant street party. Everyone will enjoy it”.
“There will be many new features in store on the 24th of March 2018. It will be the first time so many top runners compete and moreover, they will do so in an afternoon event. I love running and I would not miss this event for the world”, said Marta.
Marta Esteban is Valencia’s best athlete right now and she is one of the top ones in Spain. She already holds the city’s best time for the Half-Marathon (1:12:11) and she is close to getting the best time in the Marathon, having chalked up 2:30:47 in the last Valencia Marathon.
Marta competed in the last IAAF/World Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff (Wales) in 2016 and in the recent World Marathon in London. In the latter event, she was the 21st runner to cross the line (and the fourth European and the first Spaniard). Marta now has the Valencia event marked on her calendar.
“After running in the World Marathon in London, I am delighted to compete with Valencia’s finest athletes in my home town. I will do my utmost to run it under 1 hour 14 minutes and give my all for my local fans”.
“Valencia is a wonderful city to run in. That is true for everyone but it is especially so if it happens to be your home town, as in my case. I know Valencia and its warm-hearted people. It is a great circuit to run fast and to turn in a good time. In theory, one runs better and faster in the afternoon, so…”.
Everybody is crossing off the days in the countdown to this historic World Half Marathon Championships.
